Transitioning into life after DSA...
The transition to Independent Living is a post-secondary experience of graduates of Desire Street Academy (DSA). The program empowers graduates in several different ways by providing support services for up to three years after graduation. It allows for transition into adult life while being supported and strengthened through Desire Street Ministries.
Like many other teenage graduates, the young men who graduate from Desire Street Academy (DSA) often need more time to adjust to adult life and full independence. The program gives graduates the opportunity continue to be connected to DSM and be a continued asset to the ministry as an indigenous leader. Many of the graduates are not able to experience the on-going support from family and extended community, and need the support of their educational institution to supplement these necessary dynamics.
This program stresses the importance of teaching young adults to accept responsibility for the decisions and choices they make. It also helps them gain the basic life skills, confidence, and information they need to become successful self-sufficient adults. By keeping in touch with these young men, we can continue to encourage them in their faith at a time when outside challenges may be strongest.
The Independent Living Program enables participants to achieve self-sufficiency during their pursuit for academic, athletic or and vocational excellence by providing independent living skills assessments, training, services, and a written transitional independent living “Life Plan”. Moderate levels of funding or stipends are available to help graduates to meet their independent living needs and assist with purchases such as driver education, living expenses, clothing for work, items to set up housekeeping, and other needs that may be identified.
