Do you have any "classic" literature books you would like to donate to a good cause? Desire Street Academy has a new "Lions Read Great Literature" program. Click here to learn more and to see the list of books needed. On my last trip to New Orleans and Baton Rouge, I was struck down with a head cold and totally lost my voice. I felt paralyzed as I tried to speak at the various events and speaking engagements on my schedule. At one event, someone even had to stand in for me. Then I remembered ... this is what the Lord wants us to do: be the voice for those who don’t have a voice.

Desire Street Ministries is one voice working to raise awareness of poverty; we also try to do something about it. By investing in the development of leaders indigenous to poor neighborhoods, we seek to help the voiceless learn to speak, and find the strength that comes from taking pride in their own accomplishment of neighborhood transformation. Indigenous leaders have the greatest impact on training, mentoring and motivating others in their neighborhoods.

I read Psalm 72:12-14 the other day which says, “For he [God] will deliver the needy who cry out, the afflicted who have no one to help. He will take pity on the weak and the needy and save the needy from death. He will rescue them from oppression and violence, for precious is their blood in his sight.” God has a special place in his heart for the poor, the widows and the orphans. I pray that we all would.

Brief Update on Current Ministry Happenings

In New Orleans, our St. Roch Community Church plant is excited to welcome pastor J.B. Watkins to his newly refurbished home in the St. Roch neighborhood. J.B. and his wife Stephanie join us from the Memphis, TN area where he worked with an inner-city church plant.

In Baton Rouge, Desire Street Academy is well into its first semester for 90+ students. Our sports programs are also well underway, and we are hoping for a strong season. We have posted the schedule on the DSA page if you would be interested in seeing a game.

Our new Independent Living Program has already born fruit. Through support and encouragement, 2006 DSA graduate Bennie Fontenberry has obtained his welding certification in an accelerated program and begun working while continuing on with additional education.

I hope these few examples give you an idea how we continue working to raise up indigenous leaders, seeking through incarnational ministry to revitalize impoverished urban neighborhoods with spiritual and community development. Your interest, prayers and financial support make this possible and we thank you very much.
